Whatever the kid does, that’s just them being them.

I’ve seen pictures where the kid looks like a total stinker, and I’m going to go ahead and guess that they probably are. As a parent, you might not recognize that child because he or she feels confident and comfortable when in your presence, but is much more reserved when you walk out the door.

I look at that picture and see a kid who is hesitant or a little shy. Isn’t getting unashamedly super excited about stuff part of the beauty of childhood? Likewise, I hear parents who are bummed that their kid didn’t smile big. It may not be a textbook portrait, but it tells the story of that child. I’ve heard parents complain about their kid smiling too big - but I look at it and see a kid who is EXCITED. And maybe it’s just that I have realistic expectations for what can and can’t be accomplished in the 2 minutes that a school photographer has to capture a child’s portrait, but I think that the quirky things that kids have a tendency to do have a certain charm to them. Here’s the thing about school pictures, they capture what your kid is like when you aren’t there. Will he be really animated flashing all five of his little teeth? Will he stare blankly at the camera like his Dad did during the baby pictures where he wasn’t straight-up crying? Will he split the difference with the little smirk that he gets from his dad and the “smiling eyes” that he gets from yours truly? The suspense is killing me. Ever since I saw the poster announcing school picture day, I’ve tried to imagine what the proofs will look like. Secondly, I can’t wait to see what he does with somebody else behind the camera.

I don’t care who takes them and I’m willing to pay for them because tomorrow he’ll be older than he was today and I can’t get that time back. Tomorrow is School Picture Day at my son’s daycare and I AM PUMPED! I know what you’re thinking, “Why would you want those pictures?” Lots of reasons:įirst of all, and maybe most important, I want good pictures of my kid.

So here is the kick off to my first blog as both a mother and a professional photographer. It’s been the best and most tiring nine months of my life, but I’m slowly easing back into my freelance work. It’s been a long time since I’ve blogged because amongst other things like starting a new studio job, and moving to a new house, I gave birth to a bouncing baby boy nine months ago.
